10 Tips to How to Stop Procrastinating

By Danielle Boulton

We all procrastinate from time to time, sometimes it's due to tiredness, sometimes its hunger, and sometimes we are just in the wrong mood to be doing something important. But, there are those among us that always seem to procrastinate, letting urgent tasks accumulate until they all need to be done at once. This then leads to anxiety, un-enthusiasm, and job dissatisfaction.

Following are 10 really simple tips to how to stop procrastinating:

1. Break a big job into little tasks, instead of feeling overwhelmed you will feel really good upon achieving each of the little tasks.
2. Start at the start, but start small. Starting at the logical beginning can get inertia moving and create a waterfall effect, one small task naturally leads to the next, and the next, and so on until whoops, you've actually finished the whole thing
3. Grab some fresh air, a quick ten minute walk in the fresh air can help you lose the; "I'm too tired" or "I'm too grumpy", state of mind. It will refresh you, invigorate you, and you'll feel much more positive and ready for a challenge.
4. Start you day with a clear desk; don't start the day with chaos. Spend some time the previous afternoon clearing your desk, clearing your inbox, and making your phone calls, that way when you get to the office the following morning, full of energy, you can tackle tasks straight away.
5. Hit the mute button, the last thing you need when you are tackling a task, especially one that you have been putting off, is distractions. Mute your phone, shut your door, and turn off your email, facebook and twitter alerts.

6. Set rewards for yourself , ok, this one is for those of you who have really high levels of inner procrastination.

7. Bargain with yourself; "ok, if I get task X complete by time Y, I will reward myself with….Z" It doesn't need to be expensive or time consuming, it might be something as simple as taking an actual lunch hour.

8. Start with a skeleton, without a skeleton, you can't have a body. Get the skeleton of the task completed first, slowly add to, and build the body, and then finish with the finer details.

9. Don't try and start the other way round, it will create disorder and lead to further procrastination.

10, Keep your to-do list skinny, don't overwhelm yourself with a 2 page to-do list, this is a sure fire way of instigating your inner procrastinator. Keep it simple and concise, keep it achievable and make sure it begins with important and urgent and ends with the not important and not urgent tasks. Don't put these at the top of the list or you'll be updating your facebook status all day long, and that's about all you'll get done!
11. Get active, staying fit and healthy increases your energy, puts you in a more positive frame of mind and helps you stay motivated and energetic at work.

12. But I've tried all of these…. If you've tried all of the above, and still find yourself procrastinating, sorry to say this – you are just gonna have to suck it up and dive in head first! Good luck.
